Annotation: The article considers the problems of forming and development of visual environment of a large European city on the example of Saint Petersburg. Human interaction with architectural and graphic components of urban space is analysed in context of visual perception. The peculiarities of the impact of urban visual information objects on human perception of urban environment are revealed. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the visual information environment on the formation of the aesthetic image of the city. The specifics of legislative regulation of the quality of visual information environment in Saint Petersburg are highlighted.
