Annotation: This article examines the history of the emergence and development of knitwear products from the first samples of hand knitting to the 20 th century. The history of the development of the knitwear assortment, from knitted accessories for a suit, in particular hosiery, to the formation of a knitted suit is presented. Particular attention in the study is paid to the importance of technology development in the knitwear development. The shape and appearance of knitwear largely depend on the interloopings and yarns the product is made of. With the development of production technologies, knitwear has become a full-fledged element of the wardrobe, which was fully revealed only in the 20 th century. During this period, knitwear was widespread and was able to adapt to the fashion of each era – knitwear could support the image of femininity or androgyny, sophistication or slovenliness, it was used both for everyday life and for avant-garde experiments.
